Texas State Fair

The Texas State Fair begins Sept. 26th and ends Oct. 19th. and during this time has plenty of fun for everyone. Plenty of food, amusements, rides, shows and exhibitions. The fair has been around since the early 1800' and has brought many exclusive entertainers to the Midway, during the years. Big Tex is the main attraction on the Midway and speaks a "welcome" to the crowds that visit several times a day during the Fair. His "Howdy Pardner", has been heard many years. The voice of Big Tex has been made by the same man, all these years until he passed away and a new voice took over. Big Tex, still talks and thrills the children when they see his jaw moving as he speaks. Big Tex first started as a gimmick in Kerens, TX as a Santa to draw customers for the Christmas rush. In 1951, the Texas State Fair president purchased Kerens Chamber of Commerce Santa components for $750 and hired Dallas artist create a giant cowboy out of the material. Big Tex made his first appearance at the 1952 State Fair of Texas. Wearing size 70 boots and a 75-gallon hat, Tex towered 52' above wide-eyed visitors. His denim jeans and plaid shirt were donated by the H. D. Lee Company of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Cosmetic surgery the following year straightened his nose, corrected a lascivious wink and allowed him to talk.
