Volunteers work through the night to add a foot of sandbags on top of a permanent earthen dike on the south side of Fargo, North Dakota that protects the city from flooding on the Red River. Flood waters forced residents to flee to higher ground Thursday in Fargo, Moorhead and the surrounding area, as forecasters warned that the Red River could reach a record 43 feetby Saturday.
In this photo, houses in south Fargo, N.D., are ringed with sandbags as water from the Red River backs into their yards. Having avoided disaster during the flood of 1997, Fargo may be a victim of its own success.
